What are your experiences of trying to meet your children’s needs?

Hello,

I have a small baby (12 weeks year old), babies have expenses, they need so much milk and nappies, as the asylum seekers’ income is just home office benefits, it is difficult to cover all needs of a baby.

Fortunately there are several organisations that help people with less income to cover the babies needs.

What are your experiences of trying to meet your children’s needs?

Okay, so my answer to this week's big question of what it's like to parent, a special needs child on a low budget. I think one of the, one of the things that's happened to us is that my child is unable to attend after school clubs. It's due to safeguarding. And that when he has a, if he has a meltdown and he runs out of the room, the teacher is often on their own and therefore, they can't manage the rest of the class and meet the needs of my child. So, unfortunately, there's been two after school clubs which he loved to go to. He loved being with his friends but he's no longer able to attend those. So that now means I have to put him in after school club which is an additional cost for me because I'm at work and can't pick him up straight from school. And I now need to do those activities outside of the school day, usually on a weekend. And I have to book an additional ticket for me to attend as his carer. So it's, yeah, I end up paying twice to do something. Yeah, there's also the food thing. My child has very specific foods that he will eat and yeah, you can't buy those on a budget. So I basically end up sacrificing, what I eat in order to meet his needs so that he gets to eat what he wants to eat.

Creativity, money, endings, and precarity: what are your learnings or messages?

Creativity made the efforts of invention. With the creativity work, people can relax and find solace in their mind. Creativity work at CR made me confident to express myself, frustration out and sketch what I wanted to be. During the creativity work, I lived in my imaginary world, talking to myself that couldn't express and can think independently which help me to go ahead in my practical life.

Back in January I was forced to leave home due to emergency repair work and while they council promised to cover the costs for food while not at home, they took nearly two weeks to actually pay this, meaning I had to use bill money to cover food and transport costs while in temp accommodation that had no oven or freezer, just microwave, kettle and mini fridge, meaning food costs were higher than when at home (especially with my meds I cant safely live on pot noodles anymore). But that's had a knock on financial affect all of Feb, due to the missed bills and late fees for them. Luckily was only two bills (phone/data and gas/electric), but I've been without data most of Feb and have to use free WiFi in town when I can, which hasn't been often as I can get out often due to my disabilities. I'm lucky that my neighbours are happy to let me use their WiFi for essential zoom meetings but they have a data limit so I can't use it often and id feel bad if I did.

And I'm lucky. Because for me, it'll take about 3 months to add these additional charges into my budget before I can get back to my regular budget. But for many it could take 6-12 months to bounce back from relatively small financial setbacks like this, but when you're trapped on benefits you don't have wiggle room for emergency situations. It's so frustrating. But I'm supposed to just be grateful cos the council eventually paid me some money towards those emergency food costs, doesn't matter to them that I was left in debt due to how long they took to do so, and they don't cover those additional costs due to their delays.

Creativity, money, endings, and precarity: what are your learnings or messages?

Changing Realities have changed the way politicians understand about precariousness and how it is families that face it the most when the economy is uncertain.

It is about lifting stigma and perceptions on how low income households are facing hardship, rather than taking endlessly from the welfare system.

Creativity, money, endings, and precarity: what are your learnings or messages?

Many people experience precarity at some point in their lives. I certainly have firsthand knowledge of this. Going from unemployment to finding some sort of stability has been challenging, both emotionally and financially. Through this journey I have learned nothing is permanent - struggle and stability are temporary. During hard times, we must and do become resourceful. Support is also important - please seek and ask for help when things become insurmountable. Experiencing precarity certainly makes us appreciate security.

Shopping has gone up again! Never by just a few pence it’s a good 15p to up to 50p increase on items. It’s ridiculous! I do understand things may go up in price but what on earth justifies it to go up by what I would see I big rise. Things that cost £1 are now £1.25. For larger families this is just destroying people. I’m trying to do meal plans, do correct portion sizes and saving food from previous meals just to try save some cost. I wonder if the cost will ever come down?
